(Vero Beach, FL) - The Vero Beach Mayor is confirming that an Indian River county sheriff's deputy was shot to death and at least two others injured while serving an eviction notice at Bermuda Bay on Orchid Island.
Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers says Deputy Terri Mashkow, two other deputies, and a locksmith were at a home near Vero Beach to evict Michael Halberstam from his mother's home.
"We've had 7 calls to this residence all this month, nothing before that, almost all of them from the mother calling about him and her decision to ultimately evict him," said Sheriff Flowers.
In a multi-agency response, up to 10 emergency vehicles were on scene south of Wabasso Causeway on State Road A1A. The county's air ambulance has transported some of the injured to HCA Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce.
According to Very Beach Mayor John Cotugno, the locksmith and the shooter are both in critical condition.
Police cars and ambulances are beachside, south of Wabasso Causeway on State Road A1A.
An air ambulance landed and left the Indian River County Fairgrounds on 58th Avenue, and a Martin County Fire Rescue helicopter is there.
