Pinellas County, FL - A Pinellas County man is hospitalized after allegedly being struck by lightning while inspecting a commercial property on Monday.
Travis Kurtz, who works for a local property management company, was found unconscious on the ground by a nearby pizzeria tenant.
According to Kurtz’s girlfriend, Jessica French, investigators believe the lightning may have traveled through an underground sprinkler system before reaching him.
She said Kurtz regained consciousness inside the pizzeria after first responders arrived.
EMTs reported his heart rate exceeded 265 beats per minute, and multiple medications were used to stabilize him.
French said Kurtz does not recall any unsafe weather conditions at the time and went to the property because it appeared calm.
She added that he has the flexibility to choose his work locations and had selected this property for the day. “It seemed like a nice day, and then suddenly it happened,” French said.
Kurtz has repeatedly expressed gratitude to the pizzeria owner who found him.
French noted that he is recovering and has gained a renewed outlook after the incident.
The family has established a GoFundMe to help cover his medical expenses and to support French while she cares for him.
Authorities continue to advise caution during storms, noting that lightning can strike even when the weather appears safe.
Conductive paths such as water, plumbing, and metal structures can carry electricity to people outdoors, increasing the risk of injury.
